¿WHAT IS VIVIENDO CON DEMENCIA I+D AND WHAT WE DO?

Viviendo con Demencia I+D is a Chilean Design Studio in the process of formation, integrated by a multidisciplinary team of professionals. Through research on the needs of people with dementia and their caregivers, we seek to propose and develop inclusive design solutions that maintain or increase the functionality of people living with dementia while reducing the impact of dementia on both caregivers and the society.

This project is the result of the work of our Director Macarena Espina Díaz, an Industrial Designer who since 2016 researches strategies to approach users with dementia and their needs regarding their environments.

¿HOW DO WE CARRY OUR PROJECTS?

Both the research, ideation, and development processes are carried out through the design and application of inclusive and participatory methodologies, with a systemic and ethical approach. Likewise, we believe that collaborative, inter and transdisciplinary work is important, for it allows us to approach complex problems such as dementia.

PROMOVEMOS

  • The respect of the right of people with dementia to navigate in space, interact with their environments and carry out daily activities with independence or self-reliance.
  • Research and search for inclusive solutions with a systemic and ethical approach.
  • The right to access information regardless of any condition.
  • The right to access services and solutions for care regardless of any condition.

¿WHAT ARE WE DOING?

We are currently working on the formulation and development of several design projects, both of research and applied design, that will benefit people living with dementia, caregivers and health professionals.

One of these projects is the APP Living with Dementia, a project financed by CORFO that will be launched in the coming months, which aims to facilitate the process of evaluation and adjusting the dwellings of people with dementia.

In addition, and as part of our collaborations, we support free conversation and dissemination sessions on environmental design for people with dementia. In these instances, our director, together with specialists from various institutions, are invited to present and answer questions from the public.

If you are interested in us participating in an activity in your organization, health center or educational institution, send us an invitation by clicking the button below.

We will do our best to attend!

¿WHAT HAVE WE MADE?

In 2020 we launched a free and accessible material entitled “Living with Dementia, Guide for Housing Conditioning, with an Inclusive and Participatory Approach”, in which you can find information in Spanish about dementia; low, medium and high complexity design examples; and also graphic sheets for the labeling and marking of objects and rooms of people with dementia’s dwellings.

Between 2020 and 2021 we collaborated in the development of the document “Living with Dementia Toolbox” endowed by the Transdisciplinary Network on Aging of the University of Chile, which was supported also by institutions as Senama, Senadis, Coprad and Kintun.

Both materials can be downloaded for free from the University of Chile book portal and also on our website.
